Influence in the Society
How it stood in society in the - PAST -
There was little difference between Aztec religion and Aztec civil society. As The Aztecs primarily existed in the 14th, 15th and 16th century their food source consisted of how well they did in harvest each year and how healthy their livestock was. The Aztecs would pray to the Gods for good rains and good weather in order to provide food for the society and animals. Aztec religion played a great role in ensure that society had a stable food source.
As you are well aware, The Aztecs committed to human sacrifice on a daily basis. This was a very strict and significant ritual to The Aztecs. Much like the religious rituals of The Aztecs, the societies social status was very strict also. The society depended on a rather strict division between nobles and free commoners, both of which were themselves divided into elaborate hierarchies of social status, responsibilities, and power. Economically the society was dependent on agriculture, and also to a large extent on warfare. Other economically important factors were commerce, long distance and local, and a high degree of trade specialisation.
Priests and Priestesses were very important in both Aztec religion and society in general. They acted as doctors and taught dance, music, art, science, counting (elements of mathematics)and history. The chief of men known as ‘’Tlacatecuhtli’ controlled all the religious ceremonies but was also a military leader. Under the Tlacatecuhtli were several religious and other offices which included many military generals. Being religious and being connected to their spirituality was a very traditional and important aspect of the lives of The Aztecs.
Below is an image demonstrating of the Social Hierarchy of The Aztecs demonstrating that religion was very important to them as the high Priests were on top of the hierarchy:
