The Human Search for Meaning
Religion is a cornerstone for spirituality which, in my opinion, helps develop a grasp of moral characters and ethics. We don't really need it as a necessity to survive but it does help us get along. Also, sometimes people feel lost and often it's religion that guides them towards a new understanding, insight, or perspective.
The Aztec religious much like many other ancient religions and religions today helps to give purpose and answer the questions of the meaning of life. It gives answers to the questions of humanity such as ‘’what is the purpose of life?’’ and ‘’what is the right thing to do?’’ This leads to fulfilment in human beings live and helps us to feel as though we have a purpose and it gives our lives depth and meaning. The Aztec religion in particular gives us a greater understanding of human sacrifice and what this meant for the Aztecs. I believe that the ritual of human sacrifice taught The Aztecs that in order to receive good fortune we sometimes have to sacrifice something in our lives for the greater good.
The Aztec religion helped the Aztecs to connect with their spirituality and feel as though they belong to society. It gave The Aztecs a greater understanding of their ancestors and why they chose to believe in this particular religion. The momentous amount of Gods in the Aztec mythology meant that there was a God for everyone. Although not all of the Gods had good intention and many were corrupt or evil such as Tezcatlipoca, most of the Gods were good role models for Aztecs. The Gods all possessed a particular set of values and were symbolic for something. If The Aztecs wanted to nourish their creative side they could pray to Quetzalcoatl the creative God and if they wanted a good harvest or to break the drought they could pray to Xipe Totec. A human sacrifice to The Gods would be made everyday, everything in the times of The Aztecs was done in a schedule or a calendar, the rituals were written on the calendar for when they would take place.
I believe that human beings chose to believe in The Aztec religion due to their cultural background, ethical views, the large variety of Gods and Goddesses, the order of events (time plan and calendar) but in particular individual beliefs and the popularity of the religion at the time.
